他过了大海，来到南瞻部洲，找了很长时间也没找到神仙，只好来到西牛贺洲。

Monkey sailed over the ocean for a long time. Finally, he arrived at a new land. He walked for many years, visiting towns and meeting people. But he didn't find a sage anywhere.

这天，他来到一座景色秀丽的高山上，遇到了一位樵夫。

Eventually, he came to mountains covered in thick forest. He headed up a steep mountain trail and soon heard chopping. A woodcutter was chopping firewood.

樵夫告诉他，这是灵台方寸山，山上的斜月三星洞里有位叫菩提祖师的神仙。

The woodcutter scratched his head. "Well, yes," he said. "A sage named Subodhi lives on this mountain. He is very wise."

石猴谢了樵夫，顺着小路走了七八里。

“Thank you!” said Monkey. He waved goodbye to the woodcutter and ran up the trail.

来到一座洞府前，洞门口的石碑上刻着“灵台方寸山，斜月三星洞”。

Soon he saw a temple built into the side of the mountain.

在这座庙的大厅里，菩提祖师正和他的弟子们坐在一起。

Subodhi was sitting with his students in the main room of his temple.

石猴表明来意。“我是来见菩提祖师的！”

“Hello!” called Monkey. “I'm here to see Subodhi!”

道童领着石猴进入洞府拜见菩提祖师。

A moment later, Monkey was standing in front of the sage.

石猴虔诚跪拜，请求祖师收他为徒。

“I want to be your student,” said Monkey. “I am a Monkey, but I can walk and talk and do many other things. I traveled almost 13 years to get here. I'm sure I can be your student.”

祖师见他心诚又聪明，就答应了，并为他取名孙悟空。

Subodhi stared at Monkey for a moment and said, “You may be my student. You need a name. I may call you Sun Wukong.”

从此，孙悟空跟着师兄学习言语礼貌、写字烧香、讲经论道。闲时，养花修树、砍柴跳水、干些杂活。这样，不知不觉过了六七年。

The monkey spent his days meditating, listening to his teachers' lessons, and doing chores.

悟空的悟性极高，祖师很喜欢他，要教他“术”“流”“静”“动”等门道。

“Wukong, you have been here a long time.” said the Subodhi. “I can teach you how to tell the future and some way to magic breathing exercises. Would you like that?”

但孙悟空听说这些都不能使他长生不老，便不愿意学。

“They won't make me live forever.” said Wukong, “Then I'm not interested.”

祖师很生气，在他的头上敲了三下，倒背着手走了。

Subodhi became angry. He stood up and knocked Wukong on the head three times. Then he left the room.

聪明的悟空明白了师父的暗示。

Wukong, however, smiled. None of the other students knew it, but Subodhi had given him a secret message.
